MASS at a glance

The quirky MASS band  have been been causing quite a stir on the music scene over the last year! MASS is made up of six professional musicians, that from a bedrock of weekly informal public jams, have created the ultimate "Party Band"! They have a  "dancetastic" playlist of quirky covers mixed with their own funky mash-ups and versions of disco, dance, funk and  pop classics. The MASS sound is bright, energetic, fun and is guaranteed to fill any dance floor. 

Set-list!....... what set-list? With every performance MASS interact with the crowd and plays what needs to be played, rather then sticking to the plan! MASS just want to keep 'em bopping on the dance floor!

Disco, dance, funk and groove with a huge catalogue of quirky covers, jams,

mash-ups and Medleys………….Mmmmmmmmass!. Sounds delicious!

This exciting band came into being in a very “organic” way.  A group of musicians set up “The Sunday Club”, a musicians social club set up on Sundays in McGarrigles Pub on O’Connell St, Sligo. It welcomed musicians from every genre (Trad, Rock, Jazz, Classical) to informally meet, share ideas and jam together.  From the very first gathering, in February 2010, it was clear that this informal jamming was a hit, the Sunday Club was soon renamed Sunday MASS and has the pub packed every Sunday since. Several bands have formed from social and musical connections made in this weekly 4 hour jam, but the main one is “MASS”, made up of the 6 core musicians that have been resident since its inception.

They have a huge catalogue of catchy dance and disco covers, to funk and upbeat reggae jams. There is always plenty of “craic” and laughter with this band of very experienced entertainers. As audience participation is key., occasionally some handheld instruments are handed out to the audience so everyone gets a chance to “jam” along – this always proves to be an unforgettable moment for the unsuspecting punters!

Lisa Cannon’s astounding voice leaves audiences spellbound, as she can flit from rasping blues to “diva”esque power dance tunes. Donal Gunne from the successful band "Túcan" wows crowds with deft and lightning-quick colourful musicianship on his acoustic guitar. Hugely experienced Aaron Robinson has being playing with Lisa for years and provides solid and funky backing guitar and vocals to this bands varied and eclectic set-list. The unique sound of MASS’s rhythm section gives the band its special sound, Peter Crann on Congas and Bongos provides an irresistible latino dance feel while New York’s finest, Jaimie Carswell, pumps out juicy bass lines using his experience with his years playing with Jazz , funk and Hip Hop  bands across North America and in Ireland. The band is kept tight as a button with colourful drummer Tony Travers on his drum-kit. His high-energy and comedic imput into the sound is always a massive hit with any audience.
